Athens and Sparta
Athens and Sparta are the two most popular city-states in Greece. Athenians thought they had the best city-state in Greece. They realised that the other city-states had value as well. Many other city states compared themselves to Athens. Some people in other city-states might say that our buildings would be as good as the ones in Athens. Athens was famous for their arts science and Sparta was known for their strength. Spartans were also the best warriors in all of Greece. Men and male children lived in soldiers barracks until they retired from military service. The men were often away in battle so the women had to stay behind to guard the house. For the men to prove they were citizens of Sparta the had to prove that they were ancestors were original people of Sparta and if you didn't prove that your ancestors lived in Sparta and you didn't have enough money to pay for the search you could be killed. The ancient Greeks believed that each city state had one or two Gods looking down on the city, the God that took charge of Athens was Athena goddess of wisdom. Boys in Athens went to school they learned poetry and learned how to play an instrument usually named the lyre. They studied public speaking, reading and writing. Sons of nobles went to secondary for four years learning about sciences and arts and politics and government.
Alexander III
Alexander The III, king of Macedonia (Greece), is known as Alexander The Great. In his short life he conquered almost all parts of the world. Alexander was born in 356 BC in Pella, Macedonia. He soon earned trust from nearly all the Greek city-states. In 344 BC he brought a large army and invaded Persia. In 333 BC Alexander deafeated king Darius III of Persia. In 322 BC Alexander took Egypt from the Persians and became pharaoh of Egypt. Near the River Nile he found new land and named it Alexandria. In 331 BC Alexander went to Asia and again deafeated Darius. Then he was called king of Asia. Soon after he captured Iraq and Susa. Many of Alexanders men wanted to go home but they had to advance further into Asia. In 327 BC Alexander went to India. Their he fought his last great battle. He defeated the Indians and founded two cities. At this point Alexander's men refused to go further. In 324 BC Alexander returned to Susa. The next year Alexander returned to Iraq. Weakened by his battles and travels he died there of a fever
Gods and goddesses
In this part of my project I am going to write about four gods Zeus,Ares and Hades. Zeus is the most known Greek God. He is king of Mount Olympus all the other gods live in Mount Olympus as well.
Above: Mount Olympus
Zeus was the last child of the Titans. Cronus was Zeus father and Zeus avoided being swallowed by Cronus. Cronus had already swallowed Demeter,Hestia,Hera,Hades and Poseidon. Along with Hades and Posidon, Zeus shared the rule of Greece and became king of Mount Olympus.

Hades
Hades was the God of the underworld and the name Hades came from home of the dead as well. He was the oldest boy of the Titans. Hades and his brothers Zeus and Poseidon defeated their father Cronus and the rest of the Titans claming rulership over the Cosmos. They agreed to split their rule into three Zeus became God of the skies,Posidon the God of the sea and Hades God of the underworld. Later on Hades was known as Plouton, the name Pluton comes from Pluto the planet. The God of the underworld was married to Persephone as she became queen of the underworld.
Ares
Ares is the God of war, he is one of the twelve Olympian Gods and the son of Zeus and Hera. He is well known as the lover of Aphrodite, who was married to Hephaestus. The Roman counterpart to Ares was Mars, who was known as a father to the Roman people. Because of this he was less aggressive but more calm and understanding. Ares was never very popular with other immortals. As a result his worship in Greece was not popular and it did not spread across Greece.
